Cargo Net Inquiry Leads to Pen Pal Program with Nesting Birds Publishing and South America.

We had received a phone call prior from Alyce, the owner of https://www.nestingbirdspublishing.com/ . She called to inquire about a cargo net being constructed for her mobile book bus.
During our conversation, after I asked her what the cargo net was for, Alyce told me what she was doing, and shortly thereafter a life-long passion for helping kids read and write was born between Alyce and my wife Dora from Paraguay, who I had briefed about the call from Alyce.
Dora and Alyce have been in contact since Alyce called regarding the custom cargo net for her bus. They are working together on a program to link up kids from South America and kids from the USA using a pen pal writing program, among other projects like the little free book libraries. This way, the kids can have a live link to other cultures and traditions that this world brings us, as well as possible friends for life.
Alyce runs a non-profit that helps kids in Detroit and elsewhere have access to books and other educational programs such as her new international pen pal writing program https://www.birdiesbookmobile.org/pen-pals-1 , inspired in part by her relationship with Dora.
Just in the last few days, Alyce had some kids from Detroit that are involved in her writing program begin their pen pal adventure in South America by writing these letters to a specific group of kids in Paraguay, who will receive their letters from their pen pals in Detroit in a few days. We can’t wait to see how the kids in Paraguay respond.
Now this is just too cool, isn’t it? Who would have ever thought that a business specializing in custom cargo net design and manufacturing would get involved and help spark a pen pal adventure in South America for kids? This is probably the most significant thing that has ever happened in all my 22 years of running this business and I find it not only rewarding, but fascinating.
My wife Dora, from Paraguay S.A., works at the local library as a volunteer. She brings with her experience as a librarian and notary from Paraguay, and worked in the Paraguayan-American Cultural Center in Asuncion before she came to the USA. While Dora was working there, I would visit the center and see her helping other kids who wanted to learn and expand their horizons. I never thought in a million years that something so satisfying could come from doing what I do.
As in many other countries, some kids in our own country don’t have proper access to books or writing projects. Alyce is changing all that. And in our eyes, she’s a hero.
