Truck Bed Organizers and the Evolution of the CargoCatch Truck Net brings back the past for me. It brings back memories of a different time. This is the short story of the CargoCatch Pickup Truck Bed Organizer from an inventor’s perspective.
One day it all changed. The CargoCatch Pickup Truck Bed Organizer, previously known as the Grocery Gripper or Grocery Grabber, was acutally born circa 1995, when a jar of Best Foods mayonnaise in glass dropped out of the back of my convertible VW Rabbit, broke on my landlord’s newly paved driveway and stained it, but didn’t take shape really until 2004 because although I had drawings stashed away in my filing cabinet, I never actually recorded the invention until 2001, when I had a pickup truck which was a slightly different design. By 2004 I had a final design that was selling already, and I had a design patent.
It was 2001, I had been in San Diego for about 2 years. I worked in the tech industry and was hungry for more. I love pickup trucks, always have. I also love to shop for groceries. I don’t know what it is, probably my passion for cooking. I got sick and tired of my groceries rolling around in the bed of my truck because my cab was always filled up with stuff or didn’t exist at all.
Here are some pics of the original prototypes. We still have them and use them from time to time, even the burlap sack still works. It’s collapsible. We also have one made out of green lobster webbing but no picture that we can find. I’ll never forget the green webbing hanging in the fishing supply store in San Diego down by the water. I asked the guy, how much? He probably said $35 for all of it. I headed off the Home Depot to get some grommets and I was banging away in my driveway building another prototype in no time.
The CargoCatch Pickup Truck Bed Organizer is one of the best-selling truck bed organizers around and was a pivotal product in the production of many new cargo management products for trucks including custom cargo nets and the like. Remember the days of blue crate boxes and bungee cords? Those days are long gone but those days were the days of creative thought & tooling metal, fireside beer chats and bike rides at the beach in San Diego.
